Thompson, a La Grange native and member of the last graduating class of Randolph High School, was killed during combat in Vietnam. An Army sergeant delivered the telegram to his mother, Mrs. Ida Mae Thompson, who lived on Fannin Street. Private Thompson, 20, had been in Vietnam for six months serving as an infantryman. He entered the service on Aug. 15, 1967. Before going overseas, he was stationed at Fort Polk, La.
