Remember when?

July 5-9, 1968

Arnold H. Knippel, a former Fayette County deputy sheriff and La Grange police chief, was shot and killed early Monday morning in Columbus. Mr. Knippel, 67, who had served as chief of police at Columbus for the prior five years, was fatally wounded when he responded to a disturbance at a residence. A Fayetteville native, Mr. Knippel was survived by his wife and a son, Calvin, of La Grange. An arrest warrant for a suspect was issued by the sheriff’s department in Colorado County.

Lieutenant Corporal Kenneth J. Lev, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie J. Lev, was wounded for the second time while serving with the U.S. Marines near Da Nang in Vietnam. A graduate of Bishop Forest High School in Schulenburg, Lev, 19, suffered mortar wounds to his stomach, thigh and throat. He had been in Vietnam since February.
