Louisiana Revelers Drive Wrong Way from Houston and Get Arrested in Schulenburg

Three men from Lousiana who went the wrong way home after a late night of partying in Houston wound up in the Fayette County Jail on Sunday morning.

Schulenburg Police recieved a call around 5 a.m. on July 15 reporting a vehicle stopped at a green light at the intersection of US 77 and US 90. Officer Duane Meagher responded and found a vehicle sitting at the light with the brakes lights on. Meagher tried contacting the individuals inside the vehicle, whom appeared to be passed out, according to Schulenburg Police Chief Troy Brenek.

"The three occupants of the vehicle could not be woken up," Brenek said. "Eventually the driver woke up, and took off from Officer Meagher."

Meagher pursued the vehicle west on US 90 (Summit Street). Brenek said the vehicle ignored the lights and siren and continued through Schulenburg on US 90 driving all over the road. The vehicle eventually stopped near James Avenue in the 1100 Block of Summit, where Meagher conducted a felony traffic stop and took the driver into custody. Brenek said the two passengers ignored commands to get out of the vehicle. Fayette County Deputy Terry Guentert arrived on scene and assisted Meagher in removing the passengers from the vehicle.

The officers searched the vehicle and found numerous open alcoholic beverage containers and drug paraphernalia. The occupants told the officers they were partying in Houston and had no idea how they got to Schulenburg. The driver, Gregory Burgess, 24 of Louisiana, was charged with Driving While Intoxicated and Evading Arrest with a Motor Vehicle. Passenger Anthony Perkins, 23 of Louisiana, was charged with Public Intoxication and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Passenger Patrick Dietz, 24 of Louisiana, was charged with Public Intoxication. Schulenburg Police Officer Jon Aston assisted with transporting the subjects to the Dan R. Beck Justice Center in La Grange.

The Brenek wished to thank the Fayette County Sheriff's Office for the assistance on scene and at the jail.
