Schulenburg Festival Almost Here
It’s July in Fayette County, Texas, and that means two things are certain: first of all, it’s hot, and second, the folks in Schulenburg are gearing up for the Schulenburg Festival, held every year the first weekend of August.
The modern three-day celebration (Aug. 3-5 this year with kick-off activities actually beginning Aug. 2) has its roots in the annual horse and dairy show which goes back at least to the 1940s. The name was changed in the late 1960s, and the organization was incorporated in 1975. Some of the events and details have changed, but the core activities have remained the same: musical entertainment and people getting together to have a good time.
The Schulenburg Festival has a strong entertainment lineup once again. Friday will delight country music fans, old and new. The evening opens up with some area talent. David Lewis, who hails from Bellville, and his band will provide covers of legendary country artists as well as some of their own original material. Then Mark Chesnutt takes the stage to relive some of his 14 Number 1 hits from the 1990’s, as well as some of his other 23 Top Ten singles from that era. Friday’s final act will be Josh Ward, who is currently burning up the Texas music charts and selling out venues in Texas and beyond. Josh is returning to Texas from a successful set of shows in California, Arizona, and Las Vegas. His website describes his as “country music blood to bone”, and that is reflected in his music.
