Ellen Olga Antosh was born to Angeline and Joe Antosh at a farmhouse close to Ammannsville/ Swiss Alp on Sept. 4, 1925. She attended the Swiss Alp School through the eighth grade then ninth and 10th grades at Washington School. She walked three miles to school every day. Eleventh grade was completed at La Grange High School. Her parents paid a neighbor one dozen eggs per week so that she could have a ride to school and she sold her bike for $5 to pay for her senior ring. At age 16, Ellen decided that she wanted to go to SWTTC (Southwest Texas Teachers College) to become a teacher. She and her mother picked cotton to save enough money to catch a bus. They arrived at San Marcos, walked up the hill to Old Main with all their belongings in a small suitcase and told them that she wanted to enroll. Ellen loved history, so it became her minor. After one year, she received her teaching certificate. She taught at Providence, past Hallettsville on the banks of the Lavaca River one year, then moved to the Vysehrad school where she taught 6th-10th grades. This was during World War II. After two years, she moved to Nixon for one year before moving to Schulenburg. She taught for the next 37 years at Schulenburg Elementary and Freyburg schools. Every summer, Ellen would return to San Marcos until she completed a bachelor’s degree in education in 1949. After she and Johnnie Holub married on Nov. 4, 1947, their first home was where the Dairy Queen is now located. Soon after, they bought the 41-acre farm on Highway 90 where they lived and raised their family until the summer of 2017. Her joys and the lights of her life were her six children and her 11 grandchildren: Jackie, Kristie, Dwayne, Holly, Brent, Blake, Tara, Frank Eric, Clayton, Angeline and Vincent. She wrote a letter to each grandchild every week that they were in college! Ellen was also blessed to be the great-grandmother to 10 greatgrandchildren: Megan, Malori, Mandi, Elizabeth, Ethan, Lily, Addison, Victoria, Scarlett and Phoebe. Her unconditional love and the joy she brought to each and every member of her family will be remembered for many years to come. She will be greatly missed by many. Survivors include two daughters, Charlene Simper of Moulton and Ginger Tilicek and husband Frank III of Schulenburg; three sons, Wayne Holub and wife Donna of Schulenburg, John Holub Jr. and wife Elena of Columbus, and Dale Holub and wife Gay of Pflugerville; daughter-in-law, Irma Holub of Schulenburg; 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Johnnie, son Derryl and son-in-law Dan. Donations may be made in Ellen’s memory to Schulenburg ISD and/or Hospice of South Texas. The family of Ellen Holub thanks each of you who was a part of her life and who brought her such joy.
