A Pasadena woman was fatally injured and another female from Houston was in critical condition in a Giddings hospital following an automobile-farm tractor collision on U.S. Hwy 290 just west of Ledbetter. The tractor driver, a 13-yearold Ledbetter boy, was not injured.
Chief I. W. Speckels, a dedicated member of the Schulenburg Volunteer Fire Department for 38 years and its chief for the prior 35 years, retired after completing nearly a half-century of service in firefighting. The veteran fireman joined the La Grange Fire Department in February 1919 while his father, the late Henry W. Speckels, was chief in La Grange. After serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, I. W. Speckels maintained his membership in the La Grange department until he was elected a member of the Schulenburg department on May 13, 1930. Upon his retirement, he was elected chief emeritus by request.
