Breakdown of Sale Deal Throws Hospital’s Future into Uncertainty
The breakdown of a deal last week that had been in the works for a year to sell St. Mark’s Medical Center has thrown the longterm future of the facility into uncertainty.
For the past year, St. Mark’s Medical Center leaders have been negotiating a sale of the La Grange non-profit hospital to the parent company of Austin-based St. David’s Medical Center.
That parent company is Hospital Corporation of America, a for-profit company based in Nashville, that manages 177 hospitals.
That sale, hospital officials believed, would have stabilized the financial future of the hospital long-term.
St. Mark’s is currently a clinical affiliate with St. David’s but pays to be managed by Plano-based Community Hospital Corporation.
In a statement released Thursday, hospital officials said: “After pursuing an initial suitor for approximately one year, the St. Mark’s Medical Center Board of Directors was notified that the suitor is terminating their acquisition discussions with the hospital. No specific reason was cited in the notification,” the statement read.
