No Homework – No Grade
I saw a story recently about a teacher in Florida who says she was fired for refusing to give students credit for work they didn’t turn in. As the story progressed, I read that she was unaware of a school policy that required teachers to give a minimum grade of 50 regardless of the quality of the work or if it was even turned in at all. I’m sure the teacher’s reasoning for giving the students a grade of zero was to instill responsibility and work ethic.
I was that teacher at one time. My theory was similar – no work, no grade. Unfortunately, what I found was the students who cared about the zero affecting their grade were the ones who either 1) never let it happen, or 2) made sure it only happened once. That was the intended outcome. The reality was a bit different.
