The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office reports that man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a shootout with officers on FM 153 near Winchester Sunday afternoon.

According to a report from Sheriff Keith Korenek, his office received a call from authorities in Brazoria County around noon on Oct. 21 reporting a homicidal subject who was possibly in Fayette County.

“The information we received was that he had some friends in La Grange, and that’s why he was in our area,” said Lt. David Beyer of the Sheriff’s Office.

Officers located the subject driving a vehicle in La Grange around 1:40 p.m., and a pursuit ensued out of town.

Officers deployed two sets of spikes on FM 153 near Winchester. The second set successfully blew out the tires. The vehicle came to a stop in Bastrop County, where a standoff ensued.

“The individual would not surrender and was in a stand off with the Deputies negotiating with the individual," the Sheriff’s report said. “Shots were fired and the incident ended with the suspect deceased of a self inflicted gunshot wound.”

The Texas Rangers are investigating the case, Beyer said. The subject’s name has not been released pending notification of the next of kin.
