Remember when?

Oct. 22-29, 1968

Bobby Leonard, a Houston man who farmed on weekends in the Radhost community between Hostyn and Holman, had an alarming experience while plowing with his tractor. Having had wolf trouble in the past, he was carrying a rifle when he spied a big, three-legged she-wolf. He shot, crippling the animal and it ran into some trees. When Leonard followed, two other wolves appeared and began tussling with him. While warding off the attack with the butt of his gun, he sustained numerous scratches on his hands and the stock of the rifle. When he finally got a shot at the injured wolf, the other two ran off. Leonard’s neighbor, Edwin G. Kruppa, brought the wolf’s scalp to county treasurer Lloyd Dippel to collect the $5 bounty payment Leonard had earned.

The Frauleins from La Grange High School presented their peppy dance numbers for an appreciative Austin crowd that included Muriel Humphrey, the wife of the Democratic presidential candidate, Hubert Humphrey, and Lady Bird Johnson, the wife of U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson. Members of the group included: Nancy Zigal, Evelyn Recek, Rebecca Munsch, Jarol Huebel, Pat Scharnberg, Linda Frerichs, Carol Kleiber, Donna Hodde, Karen Williams and Connie Janda. Playing for the dance troupe was the Frisch Auf Five – plus two: Lynn Wessels, Gary Diers, Don Meiners, Jimmy Legler, Wayne Anders, Ronnie Sacks and Greg Smith.
