Second Chance, La Grange’s popular charity thrift store, is more likely your first and only chance. Where else will you find a ceramic butter dish topped with yellow owls? A deck of cards featuring Scottish royalty, an all-wood toilet sculpture, or a Blue Ridge Pottery dessert plate to match (or nearly) the one you dropped and broke on Thanksgiving?

Nowhere but here at Second Chance, just waiting for nobody but you.

So proved Janet Murphy on a recent Friday. Cruising the furniture room, Janet spotted a gorgeous realist painting: one purple iris in dramatic bloom. Second Chance volunteers brought the painting off the wall for closer inspection; it’s an original by M.L. Kidd. Does anyone know this artist? Janet doesn’t, but she does know iris. She’s the foremost iris authority in Fayette County, having just brought her expertise and several bags of iris rhizomes to the La Grange Garden Club’s October meeting. This painting was meant for her. “It’s a nice frame, and in good condition,” Janet remarked. In a word, SOLD!
