TALE OF TWO CITIES

Round Top mayor Barry Bone is a man with a plan, one aspect of which will be welcome to town wastewater customers.

“Current wastewater rates in Round Top are three times higher than the average rates ($30) in La Grange,” he told the council at last Monday’s meeting. “After reviewing the monthly service charges, I believe we are collecting 30 percent more than is necessary to fund the system.”

The mayor wants to tap Round Top Economic Development Corporation (EDC) funds to upgrade the system. “The EDC was created to establish the wastewater system for our business community,” Bone noted. “The EDC is also permitted to help fund maintenance and operations (M&O) of the system. If EDC helps with the M&O, we can reduce rates by another 30 percent.”
