Raska
Ruby Raska was born, at home, in Fayette County, to Jim and Annie Haas Raska on Oct. 5, 1931. She was welcomed by her sister, Edna Mae.
Ruby attended grade school at Elm Grove, and high school in Flatonia. She married August Kalinec on Sept. 5, 1949. They had two sons, August James, born Dec. 15, 1950, and Walter Joseph, born July 16, 1952.
Ruby worked at various jobs throughout her lifetime, being employed into her early eighties, which gave her a reputation of having a tremendous work ethic. For recreation she enjoyed playing dominoes and bingo. She also enjoyed keeping animals. Over the years she raised several chickens, ducks, geese, and sheep, among others, all of which she thought of as her ‘babies.’
She was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2014 and the dreaded disease limited her ability to perform normal activities. The effects of this disease played part in a fall, the complications of which would lead to her death. She passed away on February 6, 2019. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Annie Haas Raska, her sister, Edna Hunger, Edna’s husband, Helmuth, her ex-husband August A. Kalinec, her partner of many years, Gene Brosch, along with several aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.
She is survived by her son August, his wife Mary, and their two sons, August Jr. (A.J.) and Randall, her son Walter, his wife Marilyn, their daughter Wendy, her husband Russell Avery, and their children Savannah, Holly, and Ryan, as well as Marilyn and Walters’ son Sam and his children Kristene and Samuel Jr, along with several other relatives and friends.
There will be a memorial service at the Flatonia Civic Center (senior citizen section) on Saturday, Feb. 23, at 1 p.m. All who wish to attend are invited to do so.
