A Voice from the Garden!

I was about 13 years old and old enough to go on jobs with my Dad whose profession, besides farming, was house moving. I went along to help as much as I could. I was known as a “gopher” – one who would “go-for” tools, blocks, nails, hammers, etc. and bring them to anyone who needed them.

My favorite Uncle Jerry used to work for Dad mostly as the house-moving truck driver. He was the comedian of all the other uncles, always telling jokes and he’d always laugh at situations that sometimes weren’t really funny! He always said he didn’t really have to work and that he was only helping Dad out. After he delivered the house to the site, he also helped in setting the foundation and completing the whole job.

On this one occasion, I was busy carrying concrete blocks around the house. I was on the opposite side of the building when I heard his voice, “Florian, come here!” So I dropped what I was doing and hurried to the other side to find my Uncle kneeling at the place he was to set a foundation block. He pointed to a shovel about six feet away from him and asked, “Can you please bring me my shovel?” Talk about being lazy, but I did as I was told.
