Carmine VFD Hosting Hamburger Appreciation Saturday, March 2

The Carmine Volunteer Fire Department’s regular meeting is on Feb. 28 at 7 p.m.

A hamburger appreciation meal will be held on March 2 from 6 to 8 p.m. for those who worked at the July Firemen’s Feast and Fundraiser. You may eat it at the Firemen’s Annex or take it to-go. Please contact J. C. Pohl, Bubba Etzel, Daryl Ray, Dennis Gerland or Mike McIntosh if you plan to attend.

Dues may be paid for the 2019 year by mailing $10 to CVFD, P.O. Box 217, Carmine, Texas 78932.

RT-C School News

The Round Top-Carmine high school baseball team plays at Granger on Feb. 26 at 5 p.m. They will participate in the Hwy 290 Classic tournament from February 28 through March 2.

The elementary school Hall of Fame program will be held on February 28 at 2:30 p.m.

Looking ahead, Spring Break will be from March 11 through 15.

Heritage Committee Meeting

All persons interested in the history of the Carmine area are invited to attend the next meeting of the Heritage Committee of the Carmine Chamber of Commerce. The meeting will be held on March 6 at 10 a.m. in the museum. A question and answer session related to the location of homes, businesses, schools, roads, etc. from 1900 to 1950 is planned. If you have questions, or perhaps answers for others, please try to attend this March 6 meeting.

Mixer/Awards Night

Carmine Chamber of Commerce Mixer/Awards Night is on March 1 at JW’s Steakhouse. A meal and entertainment will be provided. Citizenship awards will be presented. Any organizations in the area may give awards. The Chamber contact phone number is (979) 451-1507.

Sympathies

Sympathy is extended to the family of R. J. Marth, who passed away on February 12. He was buried in Houston at Woodlawn Garden of Memories on February 15. He was born in Carmine, the son of Reinhard John and Anita Oberrender Marth on December 7, 1931, and was married to the former Anna Dell Berger.

Plant and Gift Sale

The annual plant and gift sale sponsored by the Herb Society of America-Pioneer Unit will be held on March 15 and 16 at Festival Hill Institute, 248 Jaster RD, Round Top, TX 78954. They will have a great selection of bedding plants, herbs, shrubs, roses, succulents and trees. New varieties and old favorites are included, as well as lovely garden gifts and food items in the Thyme Well Spent Shop. The times are 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Friday and 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday. Credit cards, cash and checks are accepted. Proceeds from the sale are used to provide support for the gardens at Festival Hill and the Sensory Garden at Brenham Elementary School. The website is www.herbsocietypioneer.org.

Rebekah Group

The Rebekah Group of Martin Luther Lutheran Church met on February 14 in the Fellowship Hall with 11 members present. They were Leonita Sanders, Dianne Sager, Dianna Gerland, Avalda Pohl, Barbara Jacob, Diana Wunderlich, Joys Baird, Sedalia Ullrich, Susan Ray, Nancy Eilers and Colette Wunderlich.

Birthday celebrant Dianne Sager chose the hymn “When Peace Like a River,” and the group sang “God Be With You” for Ora Lee Levien’s birthday. Other birthday celebrants were Leonita Sanders and Terry McIntosh. Dianna Wunderlich led the Bible study, “Meetings with Jesus; By Night and Day: Coming to faith in Jesus,” based on John 3:1-10 and John 4:5-15. She pointed out that several stained glass windows in the sanctuary follow this theme. “Come to Me, All Pilgrims Thirsty” and “Fill my Cup, Lord” were sung for the Bible study.

The meeting was called to order by Susan Ray, president. The Purpose and Mission statements were recited.

Dianne Wunderlich reported for Mission Action that there were enough items to make 25 Baby Care Kits. They will be assembled and packed on February 20 at 2 p.m. There are about 50 to 55 quilts which will be sent to Lutheran World Relief. Quilts will be made for Camp For All, starting in March. Krause Center can also use some again, so they will be made after the ones for Camp For All are ready.

Ullrich reported for Mission Community that the nursing home birthday party at Oakland Manor in Giddings begins at 3 p.m. on March 15. The party at Bec’s Blessings in Giddings will be on May 14 with the time to be announced. We will provide sandwiches, cheese puffs and punch.

Baird reported for Mission Growth that she is distributing the rest of the yearbooks. Planning for the program and music for the WELCA banquet will begin soon. The theme is “In the Garden,” and it will be on June

5.

Collection for A.M.E.N. is during February.

Under old business, the Brazos Cluster Spring Gathering will be held at MLLC on April

27. The theme will be decided at a meeting on February 15.

Under new business, Rebekah Group will serve the Lenten meal on March 27, along with the Stewardship Committee. World Day of Prayer is March 1. Bold Women’s Sunday is February 24. The WELCA Synod Convention will be at Lutherhill from August 16 to 18 with a retreat planned. Lutherhill is currently having a building campaign.

Correspondence included a thank you note from Fayette County Sheriff’s Office for the $500 sent them for the Deputy Santa Program. A thank-you was received from Lutheran World Relief for our quilts, which were sent to Mauritania in Africa.

Sanders gave the offering meditation.

The meeting adjourned with the Lord’s Prayer, followed by the singing of the table prayer.

MLLC News

World Day of Prayer is Saturday.

Sunday School and Adult Bible Study are Sunday at 9 a.m. Choir practices at 9:30 a.m. and sings during the service. Worship with Holy Communion, observing the Transfiguration of Our Lord is at 10 a.m. Acolyte Training follows worship. Rev. David Tinker is the pastor.

AA meets Sunday at 5 p.m.

Recycling

The recycling trailer is in Carmine on Thursdays from noon until 4 p.m. behind the Carmine Volunteer Fire Department station. Enter from the Carmine State Bank’s gravel parking lot. They accept dry newspapers, telephone books, magazines, cardboard, paper, junk mail, no. 1 and no. 2 food grade plastics, all colors of glass, steel food cans and aluminum cans. Attendants are available to help unload. Make sure the plastics, glass and cans are clean.

The trailer is in Ledbetter from 9 to 11 a.m., also on Thursdays, behind the Ledbetter Fireman’s Hall.

Visitors’ Center

The Carmine Chamber of Commerce Visitors’ Center at the restored Train Depot is open on the second and fourth Fridays and Saturdays of the month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Combined Community Action

Combined Community Action with Meals on Wheels for senior citizens meets on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at Martin Luther Lutheran Church in the Mission and Ministry Building. Domino playing starts at 9 a.m. and the meal is served at 11:30 a.m. The cost is a $2 donation. All senior citizens are welcome.
