Mary Dora (Schwegmann) Maas, 88, of La Grange, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Thursday, March 21, 2019 at St. Mark’s Medical Center in La Grange.

Mary was born May 28, 1930 in Weimar. She attended schools in Holman and Fayetteville and graduated in 1947.

On Dec. 16, 1947, Mary married the love of her life, Reuben Otto Maas. They were blessed with two children, Michael James and Cheryl Yvonne’.

Mary was a homemaker, a bookkeeper for Fayette County Abstract Company, State Bank of La Grange and Kruez Market. She was also heavily involved in her church, Travis Street United Methodist Church, later known as First United Methodist Church of La Grange, as a Sunday school teacher. She was President of The UMW and Rutersville UMW and also held several officer positions in the Fayette County Extension Homemaker’s Club and a Girl Scout leader. Mary was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

One of her hobbies was creating paintings and sharing her talent with family and friends.

Mary is survived by her husband of 71 years, Reuben Otto Maas; one son, Michael James Maas and his wife, Donna, of Columbus; one daughter, Cheryl Yvonne’ Maas of Dallas; one brother, David Schwegmann and his wife, Kathy, of Georgetown; brother-in-law, Allen Mueller and wife, Annie of Ellinger; step-grandchildren, step-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Mary (Rataj) Schwegmann and Dietrich Schwegmann; two sisters: Ruth Schwegmann, Barbara Schwegmann Mueller, one brother, Dietrich Schwegmann and in-laws, Otto and Clara Maas.

A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church, 1215 N. Von Minden, La Grange, at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 26, 2019.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity on one’s choice.
