SHOOT OUT MAGIC
Dramatic Ending Leads Lep Soccer to Regional Quarterfinals for First Time Ever
For 100 minutes (80 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime) neither team could score in Tuesday’s 4A area round boys soccer match between La Grange and Boerne.
That defensive struggle culminated in one of sports’ most exciting, and nerve-wracking, scenarios: A winner-take-all penalty kick shoot out.
Five players from each team took turns facing off, one at a time, against the opposing goalie.
In a stadium full of nervous people in Lockhart, La Grange head coach William McGonagle said he did not share that sense of worry.
“Shoot outs are always intense, but I have complete faith in my guys,” McGonagle said. “They were not going to lose. You could see it in their eyes. They saw it as an opportunity to win, instead of as a chance to fail.”
