Article Image Alt Text

The Schulenburg Garden Club’s annual Flower Show was a big success last Tuesday, April 9. Judges came from the Houston area, Bryan, Smithville, and Hondo. Wanda Brown provided hospitality for the flower show judges in the morning before the judging began, as it was a long drive for most of the judges.

The show is very large compared to many of those held by clubs in District IV of Texas Garden Clubs. This year’s show had more than 230 horticulture specimens. Blue ribbons were awarded to 162 specimens of horticulture. Members Mary Demel, Jan Ripper, Janet Kobza helped with placement of the horticulture. Specimens were labeled with their common name and also genus and species names, to make it easier for guests to identify plants to grow in their yard.

Many top awards were presented. The Award of Merit was awarded to a cut exhibit scoring 95 or more. They were presented to Ruth Fabian – Queen Anne’s Lace, Bonnie Baker – Bull Nettle, Janet Murphy – Bearded Iris, Ruth Fabian – Livin’ Easy Rose and Jan Ripper – Kale. Grower’s Choice Awards (Dark Green Rosette) were presented to container grown plants scoring 95 or more. They were won by Nova Stonecipher – String of Bananas, Mary Demel – Crown of Thorns and Nova Stonecipher – Japanese Aralia.
