James Edward Mayes

James Edward Mayes, 89, of La Grange, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, May 7, 2019.

James was born in Richmond on Dec. 13, 1929, the son of Roy C. and Mary Katie (Roe) Mayes. He married Rosaria Lombardo on Feb. 3, 1951. James later in life wed, Marion (Van den Bogaard) Mayes in Kemah on Aug. 5, 1981. Both James and Marion happily settled in the community of La Grange for over thirty-five years.

James proudly served his country in the United States Navy. While in the U.S. Navy, he worked as an Aircraft Mechanic. Later, James worked as a United States Postal Carrier.

His many hobbies included repairing and restoring vintage cars, boating and fishing. He loved the ocean and the beach.

He is survived by his five daughters: Bernadette Stange and husband, Rich, of Springhill, Fla.; Belinda Alexander, of Houston; Melody Lindsey and husband, Johnny of Humble; Carol Worley and husband Jimmy; and Rachel Mayes, all of Port Lavaca; one son, Matthew Wells and wife, Mary of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and one sister, Kathryn Moore of Pearland; along with 20 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Rosaria Lombardo; and wife, Marion Mayes; daughter, Sharon Szpak; son, James Mayes; and sister, Mary Sansom.

Funeral Services will be held at First United Methodist Church, 1215 N. Von Minden St., La Grange, at 11 a.m. on Saturday May 11, 2019. A private burial will be held.
