Large Crowd Shows Up in Round Top For Meeting About Hospital District

Facing an almost-capacity crowd of 75-80 people at the Round Top Historical Society pavilion in Round Top Wednesday, Michael Corker, Dr. Russell Juno, and Ray Walther, three representatives from the St. Marks Medical Center Board of Directors, did their best to answer questions and face down barely-concealed hostility about the latest plan to address the hospital’s current financial dilemma.

A June 13 vote approaches on the creation of a hospital taxing district, with a proposed tax rate of 10 to 25 cents per $100 valuation on all taxable property in Fayette County.

As the meeting was organized by a political action committee called Concerned Taxpayers of Fayette County, which opposes the creation of a Fayette County Hospital District, it was no surprise that sample ballots and a two-sided page of bullet points stamped with VOTE NO covered a table at the entrance.
