Two Dead Following Wreck on US 77 Near Swiss Alp

Two people died after a wreck on US 77 near Swiss Alp. The accident happened around 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 14, on top of the big hill south of Swiss Alp, which is located about between La Grange and Schulenburg.

Fayette County EMS Director Sharon Muzny reported that two ambulances transported an elderly male and an elderly female to St. Mark's Medical Center, and that both succumbed to injuries. Another ambulance transported two patients to Columbus Community Hospital, and both of those are in stable condition.

The wreck involved a light green van, a brown SUV and an 18-wheeler pulling a belly-dump trailer. McCoy had not yet determined the cause of the accident, The 18-wheeler came to rest facing south in the northbound-side ditch. The van was facing north in the northbound lane. The SUV, with major damage to the front end, was facing west in the northbound lane.

Schulenburg Volunteer Fire Department Chief Jeff Proske said firefighters had to extricate the elderly man, who was pinned inside the SUV. 

The wreck blocked both lanes of traffic on US 77 until around 2 p.m. Traffic was still reduced to one lane as of 3 p.m. while emergency workers cleared the wreckage.

The accident remains under investigation by Texas Department of Public Safety. Fayette County Sheriff's Office also assisted at the scene.
