Dr. Byron Davis Neely, of La Grange, passed away on Sunday, May 19, 2019 in Austin surrounded by his family.

Dr. Neely was born in Bellville on Oct. 19, 1945.

Dr. Neely will be remembered most for his brilliance and talent, his kind and generous spirit, and his wickedly funny sense of humor. He was deeply loved by those fortunate enough to have known him and he will be missed more than words can adequately describe.

Dr. Neely was a renowned Neurosurgeon who practiced for over forty years, beginning his practice in Austin and, later, practicing throughout Fayette and Gonzales Counties. He pioneered many surgical procedures, including superficial temporal/MCA bypass, Halo brace application, stereotactic CT controlled brain biopsy, and many others for which he was recognized.

Dr. Neely’s many passions extended far beyond medicine. He loved aviation and was an accomplished pilot. He owned and piloted many different types of aircraft, such as gliders, single and twin-engine airplanes, and float planes. He restored a WWII TBM Avenger, which he later donated to the Commemorative Air Force.

His adventurous spirit led him to the love of off-roading in Colorado and Utah. Every year, he travelled with his son and several dear friends to enjoy historical sites, and, in his words, “radical trails.”

His entrepreneurial spirit led him to form many medically related businesses, including several diagnostic centers throughout the State of Texas and a medical device business in Los Alamos.

Dr. Neely is survived by his wife, Geralyn Mary Neely; his children, Melina Elizabeth Neely and Robert Joseph Neely; his twin brother, Dr. Warren Fordtran Neely, and wife, Kimberly Neely, and their children, Chad Neely and Caroline Neely Rose; and many other family members and friends who loved him deeply.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Robert Allen Neely and Mrs. Eleanor Stein Neely.

A visitation will be held on Friday, May 24, 2019 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Koenig-Belvill Funeral Home in La Grange.
