Just Call Me “Cranky”

I turned many handles and cranks as a youngster!

After we finally got electricity on our farm in the late forties, we didn’t get many of the electrified gadgets or tools available at the time. Most of our smaller machines and tools still had to be cranked by hand. This involved turning of some sort of handle attached to them. This usually involved me because Mom or Dad figured, why should they do it if they had one of us kids available. Here are a few examples:

Whenever Mom decided to bake her kolaches, one of her favorites and mine was the poppy seed ones! Now if you happen to buy a poppy seed kolache in the local stores, they are good but can’t hold a candle to the ones my Mom made. You see, she didn’t use the poppy seed whole but had me turn the crank on her grinder and grind that seed into a paste. Combine that with a melt-in-your-mouth bun and after eating four or five fresh baked – still warm – poppy seed kolaches, I’d have me a genuine Bohemian belly ache! But it was always worth it.
