Schulenburg Residents Oppose Development

Schulenburg City Council overruled its own Planning and Zoning Commission Monday night in a decision to subdivide a lot on Simpson Street.

More than 20 people signed a petition against the subdivision, which is being developed by Councilman Chip Bubela. Bubela abstained from the vote, along with Councilman Geoffery Schiffli, whose father-in-law is also an investor in the property. It passed 2-1 with council members Wendy Fietsam and Ben Herzik voting in favor.

Councilman and Mayor Pro Tem Larry Veselka cast the dissenting vote. Veselka said he wanted to follow the recommendation of the Planning and Zoning (P&Z) Commission, which held a public hearing on the proposed subdivision Monday night before the council meeting.
