The Lunch and Learn program held at Navidad Valley Community Connections on Monday, Aug. 19 was provided by Parkview Manor Nursing and Rehab in Weimar. The featured speaker was Allison Poteet, LMSW.

She presented an extremely interesting program titled “Trauma Informed Care.” When most think about trauma it’s in relation to a car accident, unexpected death of someone you love or an injury which might be life threatening. However, trauma is much more than that. It could be as simple as being stung by a scorpion, unexpectedly having cold water thrown in your face, or a myriad of other small events, which subconsciously changes the way you react to everyday situations. They provide triggers like sights, sounds, smells, songs or anything that pertains to the senses.

Trauma informed care is the ability to look at a situation through someone else’s eyes with consideration of past trauma and how that trauma affects their reactions. That trigger often produces a reaction to what we might consider a “simple situation” but to them, it causes an “overreaction” as it activates a trigger which reminds them of a past trauma.
