Keeping Track of a Summer Adventure
There’s an old saying that goes something like “it’s not the destination, but the journey.” Sometimes it’s both. Earlier this summer my oldest son, on the eve of turning 10, and I went on a train trip that essentially made a giant semi-circle around the western part of the U.S. – 10 days, 11 states, more than 4,000 miles by rail. We’ve been back nearly four weeks, but I still think about the trip daily. It was a grand adventure for two Wick boys and a journey I will treasure for the rest of my days, as I hope he will. But train travel is not for the faint of heart – or those in the hurry to get somewhere. Most of our routes ran behind schedule, and we’d get to our destinations a hour or two late.
