Yes, Mom, I Understand

Just a Thought

It’s the thing no parent wants to hear, “Mom, I don’t feel good.” We never want our kiddos to feel bad. When you are a mom who has a job outside of the home, the problem is compounded. You think to yourself, “Is it bad enough for him to miss school? If he does, then how much work is he going to miss and how hard is it for him make it up?” And then there are the other questions you ask yourself, “Do I have any paid time off left? What did I need to get done today? Can it wait until tomorrow?”

As a teacher, I had to worry not only about missing the day, but making sure that the 20-plus kiddos in my classroom were taken care of. I was so grateful that my mom (who had retired the same year I had my first child) was almost always willing to take my kids to the doctor (if needed) and keep them at her house if they could not return to school. On the few times that she could not keep them for me, I would go to the school at about 6:30 a.m. to make sure all was ready for a substitute, then return home so that my husband could go to work. And then I had double the work waiting for me when I got back to my classroom the next day.
