Education of Bilingual Students an Increasing Challenge at LGISD
Enrollment of ‘English as a Second Language Students’ Has Nearly Tripled in Past 20 Years
At last week’s monthly meeting of the La Grange ISD board of trustees, Nicole Ramirez, the school’s director of federal programs gave the annual report on the bilingual/ESL (English as a Second Language) program.
The report included data collected over the 2018-19 school year. The number of students enrolled in the bilingual/ESL program at LGISD has increased from 122 in the 2000-01 school year to 310 in the 2018-19, while total enrollment has gone from 1909 to 1915 in the same time frame. Of that 310, some 46 are in the bilingual program, 202 are in the ESL program, 57 are being monitored and 5 parents have denied services from the program.
