A La Grange area rancher reported that when he went in to buy a hamburger in North Austin, the two hitchhikers he had picked up earlier stole his new car. The next day, the vehicle was recovered nearly 150 miles away in Madisonville, along with the rancher’s deer rifle. Police apprehended a man of about 35 years of age and a woman in her early 20s in connection with the crime.

The La Grange American Legion Post planned to kick off its annual Veterans Day celebration with a barbecued chicken and sausage dinner served at the hall beginning at 11:30. The majority of La Grange businesses were closing for the day, along with county, state and federal offices. There would be no city or rural mail delivery either.

Dr. L. L. Warner, 54, was appointed to serve as Fayette County’s new attorney. A native of Louisiana, Dr. Warner had been teaching a course in business law at the University of Houston where he had been a member of the first graduating class.

A total of 3,830 Fayette County herds comprised of 65,893 breeding cattle were tested for brucellosis in a one-year period. Since just over 1% was infected, the county received a certificate designating it as a modified-brucellosis area, a very favorable result.

An outbreak of hog cholera in Fayette County was confirmed by the Texas Animal Health Division of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It occurred in a herd of about 128 swine.
