Schulenburg EDC Could Cut Payments to Blinn Campus

Some new commercial interest in Schulenburg motivated the City Council to review incentive programs for local employers at a meeting Monday night. One of the proposed changes would significantly reduce the City’s annual contribution to the Blinn College campus in Schulenburg.

The City established the Schulenburg Economic Development Corporation (EDC) in 1997 as a way of attracting the Blinn campus to Schulenburg. The EDC collects a half-cent sales tax within the City Limits.

In 1997, the EDC agreed to provide Blinn with 75 percent of the revenue collected by the EDC sales tax. Blinn built an eight-classroom extension to the campus in 2004 at a cost of $1.35 million. The EDC agreed to pay the note on the building plus 75 percent of the sales tax revenue remaining after the note payment.
