Schroeder

Virginia Ann Schroeder, 82, of La Grange passed away peacefully on Thursday, Nov. 21, 2019.

Virginia was born on Nov. 1, 1937 in West Point, the daughter of Walter and Lona (Havemann) Schaefer.

She married Dennis O. Schroeder on Feb. 17, 1957 in the Prairie Valley Community near La Grange.

Virginia graduated from La Grange High School in 1956 as valedictorian of her class.

She was employed in Houston until she returned to La Grange in November of 1956 to work in banking for First National Bank (now known as National Bank and Trust). She began as a secretary to the bank President William Hofmann. Over the next forty-six years she achieved the presidency of the bank in 1982 and head of the brokerage department as she studied for her financial planning certification. In the late 1990’s she served as president of the South Central Texas Bankers Association. She retired from her day to day duties in December 2002. She continued as National Bank & Trust’s Vice-Chairman of the bank’s Board of Directors until April of 2003.

Virginia was a faithful member of St. James Episcopal Church in La Grange.

Some of Virginia’s hobbies included her love of traveling, listening to classical music, and spending quality time with her family and friends.

She is survived by two sisters, Carol Renker of Austin and Shirley Schaefer of La Grange; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, along with many dear friends within the La Grange community.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dennis O. Schroeder, June 30, 1992; and one brother, Walter Fred Schaefer, June 26, 2017.

A memorial service will be held at St. James Episcopal Church, 156 N. Monroe St. in La Grange, at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2019 with Rev. Fr. Eric Hungerford officiating.
