The Time I Gave Grandma a Black Eye & Other Memories

My Grandma Fietsam turned 103 Saturday. She’s the oldest person at Care Inn in La Grange and one of the oldest people in Fayette County. For the party she wore a crown that said “Birthday Girl” and she ate a few donut holes and cheerfully greeted guests at the front door of Care Inn for a while. And then she got tired and said she wanted to go back to bed. When you are 103 and it’s your birthday you get to do what you want, even if it’s leaving your own birthday party early. But we didn’t let her leave before we stopped everyone who was playing dominos in the front room at Care Inn and the ones watching the classic movie on the TV and asked them join us in singing her Happy Birthday.
