Lady Horns Go 3-2 at Home Tourney
The Schulenburg girls basketball team placed fourth out of 16 teams at their home tournament last week, winning their first three games before falling to Gonzales by one point in the tournament semis, and then losing to Franklin in the third place game.
Here’s a spotlight on the Lady Horns’ 40-26 win Thursday over Weimar:
Schulenburg made their presence known early on defense, exhibiting their “diamond” full court press against Weimar right from the opening inbound which resulted in a 9-3 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Shorthorns were also able to pick apart Weimar’s zone in the half-court. They moved the ball efficiently leading to easy baskets and a 21-12 lead at halftime. Even after settling down on offense in the third quarter, the Lady Wildcats still found themselves behind 34-24 due to Schulenburg’s relentless defense going into the fourth and final quarter. Weimar climbed back in the game with little time to spare and cut the lead to just 6 points with 5:30 left on the clock. Schulenburg adjusted by slowing the ball down and icing the game to make for a 40-36 final score.
