LG Girls Second at Giddings Soccer Tourney

The La Grange girls varsity soccer team finished the threeday Giddings tournament last week with a 3-1 record and a best-ever second place overall finish.

Day 1 saw a hard-fought 2-1 win over Needville, who knocked LG out of last year’s tournament in the semifinal round. Day 2 involved more familiar opponents with wins against Smithville (6-2) and Columbus (4-1).

By virtue of going undefeated in pool play, LG won their group and earned the right to play in the championship game on Day 3 against the other group winner and host of the tournament, Giddings. A very familiar foe and one the girls’ program has been chasing a win against for some time, this match represented an earlier than usual showdown between the two district rivals. With a strong effort by the entire team, LG went toeto-toe with Giddings and –other than an unfortunate penalty kick goal converted by Giddingsfound itself only down 1-0 deep into the second half. But a late goal by Giddings cemented their 2-0 victory and tournament championship.
