With Money to Spend, Flatonia Group Considers a Vision for Region

A group of Flatonia business people met on Tuesday, Jan. 21, to discuss forming a regional merchants association. Randy and Cindy Johnson, owners of The Market grocery store in Flatonia, organized the meeting.

“(The idea) is to get all the business owners and building owners together to decide what we want our region to be known as, what direction we want it to go and how we are going to get there,” Cindy Johnson said. “Hopefully with all of us together and more to come, if there is something we want done, we can present these ideas to the powers that have the grant monies and make some of this happen.”

Flatonia citizens voted in 2017 to establish an economic development corporation, which collects a half-cent sales tax. The EDC has since accumulated about $140,000 in funds dedicated to economic development projects.
