Oil & Gas: Questions and Answers

About 100 people filled the long room at the Red & White Gallery in Fayetteville Sunday afternoon to hear three presentations on issues related to oil and gas development in Fayette County. The seminar was cosponsored by a women’s group known as the Lamplighters. The Red & White Gallery donated the use of their premises. Kai Jai Conner moderated the presentations. The speakers volunteered their time.

Petroleum geologist Mary Van der Loop kicked things off by describing the locations of the two big oil-bearing strata in Texas – the Austin Chalk which underlies Fayette County sloping upward to outcrop near Austin and the Eagleford Shale formation which underlies the Chalk and slopes upward to outcrop at the Pecos River. Van der Loop pointed out that what appears on the surface as rolling farmland studded with oak trees actually overlies one of the most extensive oil and gas fields on the planet. According to Texas Railroad Commission data, there has been extensive development in the Eagleford formation south of Flatonia since 2009. More recently, there has been activity in the Austin Chalk in the Carmine and Fayetteville areas.
