La Grange EDC to Fund Nursing Scholarships

The La Grange Economic Development Corporation (EDC) will launch a pilot program next fall to provide funding for job training to local high school students.

Initially, the program will fund fifteen $250 scholarships for high school students to enroll in certified nursing assistant (CNA) classes offered by Blinn College. Stacey Norris, La Grange’s Director of Community Development & Tourism, said the EDC hopes to expand the program in the future to of fer training for other careers.

“We were thinking about how we could get a bettertrained workforce, and also where our workforce would come from, because right now we’ve got close to zero unemployment in the City,” Norris said. “So where do we get our workforce from? We wanted to explore our youth.”

Norris said she began discussing the issue with La Grange I.S.D. Assistant Superintendent Stacy Eilers. That led to conversations with Blinn College, which offered to provide the training.

Eilers said the cost of CNA training would normally be $600. The scholarship is aimed at students with limited means to pursue higher education.
