Dorothy Catherine Brahm Froehlich, beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great, great grandmother, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013 in Winchester. Dorothy was born Feb. 16, 1920 to Henry Christian and Mary Catherine  Staacke) Brahm in the Winchester area home of her grandparents. Dorothy’s family moved to Winchester in 1929, and she lived the rest of her life there, except for a period from 1937 to 1947. She was married to Carl Newton Froehlich on June 6, 1953 in La Grange. God blessed Dorothy with a sharp mind and many memories of life in Winchester when it was a thriving agricultural community with numerous successful businesses, many merchants and professional services, a courthouse, and a bank. She gave a precise and fascinating description of her years, kindergarten through high school, in the Winchester schools; she recalled many events and town personalities from Winchester history; she could identify the exact locations of the railroad depot, water well, four churches, three schools, and two dozen businesses, including their proprietors and the nature of the business; and she praised the townspeople who unselfishly served the churches, schools, and community organizations. Dorothy was an active, faithful member of Winchester United Methodist Church since 1951, missing Sunday morning church services only four times in all those years. She served as church treasurer and kept business and financial records from 1978 to 2004 for her church. Her
long life reflected her abiding faith in her Lord Jesus Christ. She worked for the Winchester Post Office for 41 years and
two months, including as Postmaster for over 39 years, until her retirement in 1991. Dorothy recently said what she missed most was all the wonderful people she served, people she remembered and missed even after many years of retirement from the post office.
