Johnnie Hunter – Across The Creek

Article Image Alt Text

A few years ago, a singer, story teller and actor by the name of Walter Brennan had a song out about an African American tenant farmer by the name of “Ole Rivers.” In his story he reminisced about his younger years and how he would follow Ole Rivers as he was plowing with a mule. He would walk behind on the plowed ground bare footed. As they stopped momentarily to rest the mule, Ole Rivers would tell Walter stories of days past.

I couldn’t help but look back on my younger years and see a similar picture of myself and another old African American tenant farmer who lived just across the creek from us.

In 1953, I was 10 years old. At about that time I got to know this old man whose name was Johnnie Hunter.
