Local Writer Sammey Smith Releases Newest Novel
Sammey Smith was born in Elgin during the Great Depression, and survived the lean years of World War II. Because his help was needed on the farm during planting and harvest times, Sammey ended up missing a lot of school. However, he was able to finish the tenth grade at Pleasant Grove. For his junior year, Smith had to ride a horse five miles to catch a bus in order to attend Thrall High School. Finally, he transferred to Elgin for his senior year and graduated in 1948. Unfortunately, Smith’s parents were sharecroppers, and couldn’t afford to pay for his college tuition. So, after working on the farm for two years, Smith joined the Air Force at the beginning of the Korean War in 1950.
