A Look at Other Communities That Rejected a Hospital District

Lots of folks on both sides of the proposal to create a hospital taxing district are asking the same question after the election last week: What will happen to St. Mark’s Medical Center now that the proposal failed?

Similar scenarios played out in two other Texas communities in recent years with varying outcomes.

Voters in Montague County twice decided against creating a hospital district to fund Bowie Memorial Hospital, once in 2011 by 671 votes and again in 2015 by 184 votes. The 2015 proposal involved a proposed tax of $0.17 per $100 valuation to support the hospital in Bowie.
