Tax Hearing: County Operating ‘Month-to-Month’ Without Increase
Another large crowd packed the Fayette County Commissioners courtroom on Monday, Aug. 19, for the second and final public hearing on the county’s property tax rate.
Commissioners have proposed a two-cent tax increase, from $0.444 per $100 valuation to $0.464. The proposed tax rate will raise $1.6 million more in property taxes than last year, an approximately 11.59 percent total increase. Of that amount, $350,454 comes from new property added to the tax roll this year. The remaining $1,250,617 of new revenue would come from the two cent property tax increase. A rate of $0.425 per $100 would have brought in the same amount of revenue as this year.
The first question at the public hearing came from Mark Sacco of La Grange, who said he moved here just a few months ago: “My main question is why the tax increase? What is the main focus?”
