Judge: ‘We’re Not Going to Pay’ For Construction Miscues at EMS Complex

County leaders are refusing to pay for a big mistake at the new $1.9 million Fayette County EMS Headquarters.

Two weeks ago the general contractor, Don Krueger Construction Company, requested a change order to relocate air conditioning condensation drains in the concrete slab of the ambulance bays. At the time, Commissioners postponed payment for the job until the general contractor could appear in person and explain the request.

Krueger representatives Gary Haffernick and T.J. Culberson came to last Thursday’s Commissioners Court meeting. They said the company would need $3,545 to cut out and relocate drains. The drains were designed to carry air conditioning condensation from ambulances to the outside of the building. However, they were installed in the wrong location and will not work as designed.

“If I was an architect or in construction,” said County Judge Joe Weber, “and I was building this thing for ambulances that were going to be parked in there, I would want to know where that ambulance is going to be sitting so I could build this thing and design it right to catch that condensation.

“I’m not sure that’s on us to do that,” Weber added. “We paid a lot of money for people to figure that out.”
