County’s New Landfill Rules Reference the ‘Last Ice Age’

The biggest news item out of the Fayette County Commissioners Court meeting was the public hearing and votes over the proposed tax abatement program. But that wasn’t the only news. Commissioners took up a total of forty items in a four hour meeting on Thursday. The following are a few of the highlights:

Anyone wishing to build a landfill in Fayette County will now have an extremely difficult time finding a suitable location. Commissioners unanimously approved an ordinance placing strict setback requirements for landfills. The new regulations specify minimum distances from public or private water wells, schools, churches and 19 other types of locations, including facilities that are “located within 200 feet of any fault areas that has shifted since the last Ice Age.” The ordinance makes it virtually impossible to build a landfill in Fayette County. County Judge Joe Weber recommended the ordinance after receiving news recently that landfills in the Austin area are filling up, and disposal businesses are starting to look for new landfill locations.
