Faykus
Elmer M. Faykus, 86 of Brenham, passed to his spiritual life on Feb. 29, 2020. He was born Jan. 13, 1934 to J.W. and Mary Faykus in Taylor.
Viewing at Brenham Memorial Chapel began Tuesday, March 3 at noon until 7 p.m. and Wednesday from 7 a.m. until 10 a.m.
Rosary was recited Wednesday, March 4 at 11:45 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 12:15 p.m. Interment followed at Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
After graduating from college in 1956, Elmer served in the U.S. Army for two years. On Dec. 20, 1958, he married his college sweetheart, Mary Ann Sloan. The couple moved to Houston, where he worked for the Federal Government for one year.
He began his teaching career with the Channelview ISD as a fifth grade teacher in 1959. In 1963 he and Mary Ann moved to Brenham, where he taught fifth grade before assuming the role of principal at Brenham Elementary School. He later became principal of Alton Elementary. He attained 33 years of service with Brenham ISD.
Shortly thereafter, he was asked to serve as principal at Sacred Heart Catholic School in La Grange. He served there as principal for 17 years, while commuting daily from Brenham. He retired in 2013 at the age of 79, having worked in the field of education for a total of 54 years.
Elmer was preceded in death by parents, brothers Alvin Faykus and Ernest Faykus, sister Irene Boehm.
Her is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Faykus; children and their spouses, Crispin and Gary Martin, Misti and Don Orr, Cass and Donna Faykus; grandchildren, Tyler Faykus and fiancée Gianna Pierce, Alyssa Faykus, William Martin; numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be given to St. Mary’s Catholic Church or Sacred Heart Catholic School, 545 East Pearl Street, La Grange, Texas 78945.
