Alfred J. Artz, Jr., 87, of La Grange, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2014. Alfred was born in Houston on Nov. 23, 1927, the son of Alfred J. Artz, Sr. and Ruth (Andrews) Artz. He married Suzanne Wallace on Jan. 28, 1950. Alfred served in the U.S. Army during World War II from February of 1946 to July  of 1947. He was a co-owner of a wholesale egg distributor in Houston for 40 years. After retiring to La Grange in 1990, Alfred was a volunteer at Fayette Memorial Hospital and St. Mark’s Medical Center. He was a Docent tour guide and dulcimer player at Monument Hill Kreische Brewery State Historical sites. He served on the Board of A.M.E.N. and volunteered at the food pantry for over 20 years. He worked with students at Hermes Elementary as a mentor. He was a member of St. James Men’s Club and worked as a “Holy Smoker”. He was a long-time member of the Noon Lions Club. He is survived by his wife,  Suzanne, of 64 years; three sons: Andrew Artz and wife, Susan, of Austin; Charles Artz and wife, Julie, of Houston; Thomas  Artz and wife, Delia, of Houston; daughter, Margaret Harrist of Austin; two brothers: John Artz and wife, Dorothy, of Houston; Paul Artz and wife, Debbie, of Spring; sister, Susan Artz of Houston; brother-in-law, Robert Wallace and fiancée, Jackie Caswell, of Dallas; ten grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. Memorial services will be held at St. James Episcopal Church, located at 156 N. Monroe St. in La Grange at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 19, 2014. A private burial will be held at Winchester City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mark’s Medical Center Scholarship Fund or to St. James Episcopal Church.
