Two Bee Swarms Removed From LG School Campus

By H.H. HOWZE  Two swarms of bees were struck by vehicles on Travis Street in La Grange last week according to animal control officer Dean Ahlschlager. Both incidents occurred near the old Middle School.

The queens were injured in both cases and ended up in the school yard, Ahlschlager said.  “The other bees formed into  circular mounds about three inches high around the injured queen.” 

Both swarms were removed from school grounds by Keith Huddle of Keith’s Bee Service. Huddle is Ahlschlager’s go-to guy for bee removal and he’s been busy.

“There seem to be a lot of bees around,” Ahlschlager said. “We’ve had calls about bees in walls and water meters.” 

Since city employee Sherman Griffin died as a result of bee stings while mowing Northside Park (since dedicated to his memory), several years ago, “We don’t mess around, we get right after reported bee swarms.” Ahlschlager said.
