Hickey
Maxine (Jones) Hickey, 88, of Round Top, died on Friday, August 5, 2016. Maxine was born in Coleman, Texas on June 27, 1928, the daughter of James Mac Jones and Edna Mae (Wileman) Jones. She married Michael John Hickey on April 13, 1956 in Pasadena, Texas. Maxine attended elementary school in Oklahoma City and then her family moved to Corpus Christi where she attended Wynn Seale Jr. High School and graduated in 1947 from Corpus Christi High School. While in high school, she wrote, produced and sang in a play called “Lest We Forget”. In order to promote U.S. Savings Bonds, anyone attending the play was asked to purchase a savings bond. She was a USO dancer during World War II. Maxine worked as a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell during the war which included having conversations with some of the U.S. Presidents. Later she became a licensed realtor and also worked as a census taker. In the 1970’s, she was a brownie leader. Maxine loved to play tennis and swim at Cole Park in Corpus Christi. She was a great story teller. Her many hobbies included decorating her Christmas tree every year, listening to music, and reading. She enjoyed and loved her cats and dogs. Her greatest enjoyment were her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren whom she loved very much. She is survived by son, Christopher “Chris” Hickey and wife, Debby, of Ledbetter; son, Michael Shane Hickey and wife, Susan, of Broken Arrow, OK; daughter, Michelle L. Wileman; son, Joseph Hickey both of Round Top; daughter, Alisa Schlabach and husband, Wally, of Brenham; sister, Alice Mount of Temple; sister-in-law, Gloria Hickey of Round Top; nine grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Michael; son, Timothy Blaine Hickey; sister, Joan Smith; two brothers-in-law: Edward Smith and Ronald Mount. Visitation was held on Tuesday, August 9, 2016 from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Koenig & Strickland Funeral Home. Family received friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral Services were held at Koenig & Strickland Funeral Home at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 10, 2016. Burial followed at Florida Chapel Cemetery in Round Top. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Gardenia E. Janssen Animal Shelter, 240 Svoboda Lane, La Grange, TX 78945 or a charity of one’s choice. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Koenig & Strickland Funeral Home, 208 W. Pearl, La Grange.
