Robert Douglas, Jr.
Robert Douglas, Jr., of Boerne, was welcomed into Heaven on Sunday, Aug. 14, 2016. He was a generous, kind, and gracious man who loved the Lord and followed His guidance in every aspect of his life. “Bob” was born on Christmas Eve, 1919, in Dallas to Robert Douglas, Sr. and Stella Caldwell (Riley) Douglas. He was raised in Waco and Spearman and graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in Chemical Engineering. His entire professional career of 43 years was spent with Proctor and Gamble. Bob was proud to have participated in producing the first salable Tide detergent in Cincinnati, Ohio and was responsible for the start-up of the Dallas Tide manufacturing facility in 1946. In 1953, he moved to Cincinnati to become Department Head, Labor Relations, Industrial Relations Division in Cincinnati; other positions followed, until he retired as Manager of the Industrial Relations Division in 1983. His career with P&G was interrupted by two years in the Navy aboard the USS Braxton, the first naval transport to enter Tokyo Bay and land occupational forces in Japan on Aug. 30, 1945. During his first weekend at the University of Texas, Bob met his future wife, Mary Louise Naumann, of Smithville. They were married in 1942. In addition to his family and career, he devoted many hours to church and community service. Upon his retirement, Bob and Mary Louise returned to Texas and built a home in La Grange. Bob studied to become a commissioned Lay Pastor in the Mission Presbytery and enjoyed substituting in pulpits for many years. He and Mary Louise made a great team and loved each other unconditionally until her death in 2001. Survivors include his daughter, Pamela Sue Douglas Umstead, and son-in-law, David, of Kerrville; his grandson, Justin Lee Umstead, of Dallas, and extended family. In addition to his parents and his wife, Bob was preceded in death by his brother, Bruce Douglas, and his grandson, Scott Douglas Umstead. Bob’s family and friends mourn his passing, celebrate his life, and cherish the memory of this faithful Christian man.
