La Grange vs. Argyle

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Where: Waco Midway High School

Records: La Grange is 0-0. Argyle is 1-0.

Of Note: The big statewide story that emerged from La Grange’s lightning cancelled no-contest against Liberty Hill last week was the ankle injury to Ohio State commit J.K. Dobbins, an injury that will sideline him for “weeks” according to La Grange head coach Matt Kates. Other than that injury, the Leps looked strong in the six minutes of play against the Panthers before the weather ended the game. Colter Siptak completed four of his six passes (though he did throw one interception) with three catches for 68 yards by Julio Ramirez. In the backfield after Dobbins went out, Leps sophomore Jericho Haardt ran for 18 yards on four carries. In their one and only play, the La Grange defense forced a fumble, recovered by senior M.J. Johnson ... No. 1-ranked Argyle, meanwhile, beat Lucas Lovejoy 33-21 last week. Argyle had to deal with its own significant injury in that game as quarterback Dane Ledford (a Tuland commit) suffered an arm injury diving for a touchdown in the first half. Before that injury, Ledford threw for 171 yards and two touchdowns. He is not going to play this week. Argyle junior running back Don Williams ran for 163 yards and three touchdowns in the game ... Argyle returns five offensive and seven defensive starters from last year’s team that went 14-2 and reached the state title game for the second consecutive year. Argyle lost to Waco La Vega 33-31 at the 4A Div. 1 title game last season. In 2014, Argyle lost to Navasota 42-35 in double overtime in the state title game. Prior to that, Argyle won the 2013 3A Div. II title 38-33 over Fairfield and lost to Wimberley 21-14 in the 2011 state title game. That’s four state title game appearances in the last  the last five years!

Giddings 0-1

Smithville 0-1

Caldwell 0-1

Schulenburg vs. Luling

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Where: Luling

Records: Both teams are 0-1.

Of Note: Schulenburg looks to vanquish the bad taste of a 45-0 season-opening loss to Hallettsville as the Shorthorns  ... Luling lost its season-opener to Edna 34-25 last week to Edna. The Luling defense, based on last week’s performance, appears to be one the Shorthorns might be able to run the ball successfully against. Luling gave up 320 rushing yards, including five rushing touchdowns, to Edna. Luling went 5-6 last season but returns just three offensive and three defensive starters form last year’s team, led by quarterback Wyatt Bullock ... It’s hard to find a silver-lining out of last week’s 45-0 loss to Hallettsville by the Shorthorns, but a very talented Hallettsville team will probably do that to a lot of teams this season.

Flatonia vs. Sacred Heart

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Where: Flatonia

Records: Flatonia is 0-1. Hallettsville Sacred Heart is 1-0.

Of Note: Last week was a touch match-up for Flatonia, playing a much bigger Tidehaven squad but the Bulldogs 22-6, but things should get back on track for the Bulldogs this week against a Hallettsville Sacred Heart team that is coming off a 14-0 victory over Austin Savio last week ... Sacred Heart went 8-4 last season and returns six offensive and six defensive starters from last year’s team for head coach Pat Henke, who is 35 years coaching the team has 290 career wins ... Corey Lyons ran for 131 yards for Flatonia last week, but the Bulldogs will try to get a little more balance this week offensively after failing to get any yardage through the air in Week 1.
